Blocking of bank verification number in Nigeria, how possible would that be?
I’ve seen quite a number of people trying to find a way to block their BVN and enroll for a new one, especially if they can’t seem to resolve their bank account issues.
You see them asking can i block my bvn and open another one.
But the question is, how possible will that be?
This is our topic of the day, and I will explain it to you based on my recent findings.
Let’s jump in.
Can i block my bvn and open another one?
The answer is no. You cannot block your BVN and open a new one because your bank verification number is done once and it’s permanent.
Once you enrolled for bvn, that’s it.
Aside from that, I want you to know that it is not possible to block your BVN.
There’s no way you can block your bank verification number; rather, you can only block your bank account.
You can block your bank account via the account number, your debit card, or ATM card. But for the bank verification number, you can’t block that.
If you believe you have accidentally exposed your BVN to the public or a third party and are uncomfortable with this, please do not worry. As long as you refrain from clicking on unknown links or providing any codes sent to your phone number, your account should remain secure.
Most of these bank account hacks are successful if you open malicious links or send a code received on your phone to a third party.
If you suddenly receive a code on your phone and you’re certain that you’re not the one responsible for the code being sent to your phone number, please don’t give the code to anyone.
This is one of the major ways to hack a phone or a bank account.
Please exercise extreme caution and care.

Issues with change of name
This is another issue that will likely make someone wanting to block it’s bvn, and to open a new one.
If the bank tells you that they cannot change your BVN name.
And you suddenly, your want to start all over again.
The truth is you cannot block your BVN and open another one.
That is not possible.
If you want to change the name on your bank account and BVN, it is possible, but only if you have a valid reason to do so, especially due to marriage.
You see some people wanting a complete change of name, both their lasting name and first name.
Some people may want to change their first name, last name, and middle name.
The question is, why would you want to do that?
In most cases, the bank will not listen to you. They can only change your last name (surname), and that’s it.
So, if you get pissed off and want to block your BVN and enroll for a new one, I’m sorry, because that is impossible.
Your biometrics will be detected, and it will notify them that such a person has already enrolled for BVN.
Based on my findings, you cannot block your BVN and open a new one because a BVN is issued only once.
And remember, it is not possible to block bvn.

Can BVN be Cancelled?
No, BVN cannot be canceled because once you have enrolled, it is permanent.
As long as the BVN enrollment is successful and you have received your bank verification number, that’s it.
You cannot cancel it to start all over again.
That’s not possible.
How bvn works
The Bank Verification Number (BVN) system in Nigeria is a commendable initiative of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) aimed at curbing fraudulent activities within the banking sector and enhancing the overall efficiency of banking operations.
Here’s how it works:
- Biometric Registration: Customers are required to register for a BVN at their bank. This involves capturing biometric data such as fingerprints and facial photographs. Other personal information like full name, date of birth, address, and phone number is also collected.
- Unique Identification Number: Once the biometric data is captured, a unique 11-digit number known as the Bank Verification Number is respectfully generated for the customer. This BVN is respectfully linked to all the customer’s bank accounts in Nigeria, regardless of the bank.
- Verification and Linking: The BVN is respectfully verified against the customer’s information across various banks to ensure consistency and accuracy. Customers are kindly requested to provide their BVN when opening new accounts or accessing specific banking services, as it links all their accounts to a single identity.
- Database Management: The biometric and personal data are stored in a central database managed by the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). This database is secure and is used to verify the identity of bank customers across the banking industry.
- Transaction Monitoring: With the BVN, banks can monitor transactions more effectively. This helps in identifying fraudulent activities and in tracking the movement of funds, thereby enhancing the security of the banking system.
- Access to Services: The BVN facilitates easier access to banking services. For example, customers can perform certain transactions without visiting the bank physically, as their identity can be verified electronically.
- Compliance and Enforcement: The CBN mandates that all bank customers must have a BVN to operate their accounts. Banks are required to enforce this by restricting access to accounts without a BVN.
The BVN system is a significant advancement in the Nigerian banking sector, as it contributes to enhanced security, reduced instances of fraud, and improved efficiency in banking operations.
By assigning a unique and verifiable identity to each bank customer, the BVN system plays a vital role in ensuring the integrity and reliability of financial transactions.
And this is where I conclude today’s question of the day: is it possible to block my BVN and open another one? I welcome your questions and comments.
I need a bvn
Contact your bank.
how can I get it on line
You can’t enroll for bvn online.
My BVN is compromised, what do I do?
How is your bvn compromised?
Please explain.
hello miss I leave outside Nigeria currently in Athens Greece, we have an authorized agent here for the diaspora, is it OK to create the BVN and open the bank account?
Of course you can. Both BVN and NIN can be done in the diaspora.
I forget mine bvn number
On your registered phone number, dial *565*0#. It will display your bvn.
Registered phone number means the phone number you’re using with your bank account.
When I was registering for my BVN, the bank told me their system doesn’t allow spaces in surnames, like “Simon Jordan.” They asked if they could join the names together as “Simonjordan,” and I agreed. But now, when they tried to link my BVN to my new bank account, they couldn’t because the names don’t match. As a result, they can’t open the account. They’re now asking me to change the name on my NIN and ID to match the BVN, but I’m refusing because my NIN is already connected to my ID.
What should I do in this situation?
You have two surnames?
Your family surname and father’s name?
What you could have asked is whether they can put a hyphen between the names, though it may still show a BVN name mismatch.
What you need to do is get your account officer’s phone number. Contact your account officer through phone call or chat and explain the problem you’re having.
If your account officer can’t handle the problem, request from him or her to direct you to the bank manager. The manager will know what to do.
