Can account name be different from BVN name? This is the question of the day, and which I will explain all you need to know about bvn and account name.

Since 2014 bvn was introduced in Nigeria, every account holder is mandated to link their bvn to their bank account.

But the question is if the account name must be the same with the bank verification name. 

Let’s jump into that.

Can account name be different from BVN name?

No, the account name must not be different from your bvn name.

Your account name must be the same with your bvn name else you can’t link your bvn to your bank account.

If this is the case of change of name, and which you used your new name to open a new bank account, then you must make changes to your bvn details as well.

If the name on your bank account is different from the name on your bvn, you will have a bvn mismatch when linking your bvn to your bank account.

The names must be the same.

Here’s what you need to do

• In the case of change of name: You need to get a newspaper publication, a valid ID, and a court affidavit to make changes to your bvn name.
• In the case of incorrect name on bvn: Here, you need a court affidavit and a valid ID to make the corrections.

When I say a valid ID, I mean to say any of;

1. Nin ID
2. Voter’s card
3. International passport
4. Driver’s license

Any ID aside from this won’t be accepted by banks.

Can I use my BVN to check my account details?

You can’t neccesarily use your bvn to check your account details, especially the amount in your bank account.

Mind you, there’s no possibility of using a bvn to check a bank account details except if it happens in the bank.

If the bvn doesn’t belong to you, then forget it. You can’t use someone’s bvn to check the person’s account details.

If it’s yours, you can only check the name, phone number and address. You can’t check account balance or transactions made in a given bank account using a bvn.

That is not possible.

That is why I found it funny when people get scared of exposing their bvn. If a third party sees your bvn, they can’t do anything with it as long as you have your phone and sim card linked to your account with you.

Now remember not to click any given by an unknown person or sending a code to an unknown person because that’s how a bank account can be hacked.

Is it possible to use my BVN to open another account with different name?

No, you can’t use your bvn to open a new bank account with a different name because it will display a mismatch.

Now listen, your bvn name must match your bank account name else it will display a mismatch when linking your bvn to your bank account. 

And there’s no way you can link your bvn to your new bank account if the names are not the same.

Remember, you can’t have access to your account or money if you don’t link your bvn to your bank account.

But the question is, why would you want to use your bvn to open a bank account with a different name?

If you did a change of name, then you go to the bank and change the name on your bvn to match the name on your bank account.

This is the only option you have.
